How the Hellhounds got their name

Sean Lane is a powerful vocalist, soulful guitarist, and exceptional songwriter, whose unique style sets him apart from other artists. His music has prompted well-known artists such as Big Band leader Eddie Reed to comment, "Mr. Lane is a true blues man. The proof of this is in the reverence with which he writes, plays and sings his own songs. True to form, he moves from the role of solo performer to band leader with ease, performing music that is at once innovative and steeped in folklore".

Solo

Sean's extended family, being spread out across Louisiana and lower Mississippi, gave him a good dose of bayou life as a young child. His family moved to California and exposed him to a new kind of lifestyle and culture, but Sean never forgot his roots, saying later, "The south gets in your soul; once you take in the air, the water and the surroundings, you can't forget about it - it changes you".

As a young teenager, Sean picked up the guitar, taught himself how to play, and began writing songs. He knew he had to get back to his inspiration, so he moved to Louisiana for a time, living just outside New Orleans and soaking up the southern way of life. Sean tapped into that same wellspring that his blues predecessors had tapped into, giving his music an authenticity and raw energy reminiscent of early Delta blues.

Once he had decided to be a musician, Sean hit the road with little more than his National steel guitar and the clothes on his back. He began hoboing through the southern states, playing on street corners, entertaining passengers on trains, playing old juke joints, as well as playing in established clubs like B.B. King's in Memphis and The House of Blues in New Orleans. Sean later said, of his hobo experiences, "Street performing taught me what people will respond to; when you're out there playing music to survive, that's important"! The more he traveled, the more he wrote about his experiences. The songs became his history - the music became his life.

Sean eventually moved back to California with the realization that he had to blend this traditional, "down home" style with modern rock 'n' roll. He formed Sean Lane and the Hellhounds and began to combine the raw, earthy sounds of Delta blues with the power and intensity of a modern rock band.

The goal was to create an original music that would touch everyone on some level. This synthesis of old and new styles, of rural and metropolitan themes, of tradition and innovation was exactly what was needed to captivate and speak to a modern audience. Sean's music seems to reach every age group and ethnicity with equal impact - perhaps it's because the songs speak to our most basic desires, emotions, and sensibilities - as all classic blues do.

Sean Lane's music is the real blues - the sound that came out of the dark woods of the Deep South. Solo acoustic or with a full band, Sean's music leaves a lasting impression on virtually all who hear him perform.
